The project “The Vision That Can Only be Captured While Moving” was initiated by visual and performing art artist, Wei Ling Hung, and collaborated with Ting Shou Studio between 2020-2021.
At the beginning of 2020, the outbreak of Covid-19 led to a global lockdown and suspension of travel. As a result, this project was temporarily changed to an online voice recording collection to gather narratives about 'moving/migration experiences' under the circumstance of being unable to move. Wei Ling selected and edited five audio recordings, and collaborated with Nigel Brown to experiment with a technique that converts vibration from sound into ripples on the surface of water. They turned the technology into an installation.
For the opening of the exhibition, Wei Ling conducted a site-specific performance. Three non-artistic background individuals: a returning indigenous person from the city, a young person from the east coast who moved to Taipei, and a Han Chinese person who grew up in an indigenous community, performed while driving. Using their migration stories of drifting and settling in Taitung as the text, Wei Ling developed three performances, with one performance per car ride. The performance started from when the audience got on the car, with the inside of the car as the stage and the outside as the scene. The driver's route, narration, and gestures were the content of the performance.
