The project “The Vision That Can Only be Captured While Moving” was initiated by visual and performing art artist, Wei Ling Hung, and collaborated with Ting Shou Studio between 2020-2021.
In 2020, Wei Ling began a project in which she attempted to collect sensual materials related to the sensations of travelers or migrants in motion. However, at the beginning of that year, the outbreak of Covid-19 led to a global lockdown and the suspension of travel. As a result, this project was temporarily transformed into an online voice recording collection, gathering narratives about moving and migration experiences under the circumstance of being unable to move. She selected and edited audio recordings and collaborated with Nigel Brown to experiment with a technique that converts the vibration of sound into ripples on the surface of water.
The installation was exhibited at the Taitung Live Art Center. For the opening, Wei Ling invited three local participants—amateur performers and storytellers—to unfold their intimate tales of migration. Their personal journeys vividly reflected the dynamic landscapes of movement across Taiwan’s geography and history, like a map drawn by movement itself. Using their narratives of drifting and settling in Taitung as the textual foundation, she developed three site-specific performances, each corresponding to a single car ride. The performance began the moment the audience stepped inside the vehicle—where the car interior became the stage, and the passing scenery outside transformed into the moving backdrop. The driver’s route, narration, and gestures together constituted the performative content.
